John Masters Organics Lavender & Avocado Intensive Conditioner
Best Natural-ish Conditioner I've Tried
Conditioner has been one of the harder products to find a solid "green" replacement for the higher-chem ones I used growing up. This one passes the test. I've tried Avalon Organics and a Trader Joe's brand in the past, and they did nothing that one would expect a conditioner to do. When I bought this one, this salesperson at the green boutique said it would be too heavy for summer use, but I've found it to be just fine. I have straight, colored hair, and this product has taken care of it well, leaving it smooth and shiny, with no fly-aways. I'd like to find a cheaper substitute, but in the mean time, I'll stick with this.

For me, it's not the kind of product I looked forward to using. I didn't know of another safety-screened alternative. I used it because I think it's safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding, but I didn't like that it it didn't rub in very well. It stayed white on the skin unless really taking care to rub it all in.

Not only was this great for the first couple of weeks of breastfeeding, but it also solved my longtime chapped-lip problem. I no longer use anything else, just this, once a day. This one tiny package will probably last me much more than a year. Also, since I kiss my baby all the time, I feel good knowing that any amount of this lip salve that eventually makes its way into her mouth is approved for baby safety.

It leaves my hair soft and shiny, and it smells great. And a shopping hint-- they carry it at Whole Foods, but I was just thrilled also to find it and their conditioner at Costco in Los Angeles, in a larger size (33.5oz) for about $9 each.

I love this and use it daily. It gives a bit more coverage than the translucent loose powder I used to use. It also has staying power, keeping my shine down for a long time. I give Physicians Formula kudos for the ingredients list and for the mostly-recyclable nature of the packaging, which also looks cool. The brush itself I only use when traveling, as its synthetic (I think) bristles are pretty stiff. I also like that the package is "travel-safe," meaning that the design keeps powder from spilling or moving onto the sifter platform. I did however manage to accidentally crack the lid by closing it improperly, over the plastic tab that lifts the inner lid.

Sephora Professionnel Platinum Lash & Eyebrow Comb #21
These sharp metal tines are for steady hands only
Okay, it's an eyebrow brush. Check. And it's a eyelash comb. Eh, maybe not. The metal tines are so sharp that it's scary to put near my eyes. They are also so closely spaced that I can't comb out my lashes once there is any mascara on them. If you have children, be sure to leave the plastic cap on the metal tines. Or, even better, just buy a plastic comb instead.

I wouldn't wear it for a big presentation in front of a crowd, but for everyday exertion, it works just fine. For the nerve-wracking days, I pull out a conventionally-formulated anti-perspirant/deodorant. This one doesn't keep you from sweating, but it keeps you from stinking. And it leaves no trace on your clothes. Also, some people say regular anti-perspirants may be harmful to your health over the long term, so I say better safe than sorry (or stinky).

It's a natural product-- I like that. You know that what's going in your pores is a simple substance. It works, too, in terms of limiting body odor. HOWEVER, the other reviewers are right that over time sharp edges can develop as the salt crystal dissolves into weird shapes. One more drawback is that when you wet the substance to apply it, and then you put it down on the counter, the liquid drains onto the counter and crystals form there. Kinda messy like that. I had a plastic dish that I would store it on. I've switched though, to the roll-on liquid version of the same product. No more mess, no more cuts under my arms.
